Shepherd St NW Residence
This project is a surgical renovation of a 1919 rowhouse in the Petworth neighborhood of Washington, DC. Historical features were preserved, restored, and celebrated while simultaneously spatial layout and finishes modernized to create a master bedroom suite, office, bath and bedroom. A previously hidden dormer lite was uncovered and reconnected to the master bedroom with a sculptural, faceted ceiling, flooding the room with a volume of light.
Room sequencing was carefully coordinated with existing windows and openings. Existing doors, trims, clawfoot tub and an antique utility sink were refinished and reused in different positions. New elements and finishes complement the old, including custom Shaker-style built-ins and patterned ceramic tiles. The latter were designed and fabricated by Protz Studio based on the geometric patterns of African textiles, a response to the clients' work and travels. Traditional and contemporary blend respectfully here to create a bright, inspiring new interior.
