Villa Verona
This project reconfigured and celebrated the inherent character of a 1914-built house in Verona, NJ, about 20 miles west of New York City, for a busy family of five who often host large gatherings. Drawing on Art Deco and Craftsman influences, the house was a conceived as a series of rooms each with a unique personality. Textured clay plaster, custom casework, and intentional, discrete lighting was introduced to an existing palette of (refinished) hardwoods and ceramic. Along the main stair wall anchoring the house, Protz Studio worked with the clients to design a custom patterned mural—23K gold leaf was stenciled through a series of three computationally derived modules to generate a complex, composite pattern whose gleam contrasts the roughness and variability of the plaster.
