Highhorse Ranch
The High Horse Ranch features an offsite-fabricated private house and guest cabins on a remote site in the coastal mountain ranges of Mendocino County, California. Recalling famed architect Louis Kahn’s concept of servant and served spaces, the house consolidates the utility spaces (mechanical, bathroom, kitchen, and hallway) into a volumetric spine that permits the living spaces to be uninterrupted expanses of glass that connects the homeowner with the outdoors. The spine is constructed from three-dimensional modules and tied to a column-and-beam moment frame to manage loads while the floor-to-ceiling glazing system with flush head and sill and minimal profiles becomes an operable invisible wrapper with uninterrupted views out to mountains.
