Chilmark House
Chilmark House is sited 'up-island' on a former sheep-grazing field overlooking Chilmark Pond and the Atlantic Ocean. Two buildings form a series of courtyards and outdoor spaces, with varying degrees of privacy and views. In deference to the field's history, and to the simply architectural forms that shape the the Vineyard's architectural heritage, the house and studio were developed as a pair of barn forms with low pitched roofs that sit quietly in the landscape. In a nod to New England's bank barns, the principal structure is set into the hillside, diminshing it scale from the North and observing local building codes, while creating direct connections to the outdoors from both the upper and lower levels.
